Lace Monitor

Hi! I’m a Lace Monitor

Also known as a tree goanna, these hefty lizards are the second largest lizard found in Australia. Monitors are the only lizard with a forked tongue like a snake.

Lace Monitors occur in eastern Australia, and live in semi-humid to humid forested habitat. Males can reach up to 2 m, and monitors feed on smaller reptiles, birds, eggs, mammals, and insects.

The National Zoo & Aquarium is home to 1 Lace Monitor, Steve.
